Alicante basks in 29 degree heat as January ends on a scorcher
Beaches were packed up and down the Costa Blanca this month as holidaymakers basked in summer-like heat
While many parts of Spain are shivering through the depths of winter, the entire province of Alicante is continuing to enjoy its own kind of micro-climate, with temperatures more reminiscent of June bathing the region throughout January.
Spain has been hit by a succession of violent storms over the last couple of weeks, but you wouldn’t know it on the Costa Blanca, where holidaymakers are basking on the beach in temperatures that are close to 30°C.
This Monday January 27, just as storm Herminia was raging through the north of the country, the Marina Alta, Baix Vinalopó and Vega Baja regions were baking. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the highest daily temperature was recorded in Orihuela, where the mercury topped out at an incredible 28.8°C. The municipality was closely followed by Albatera with 28.7°C, Pego with 27.9°C, Crevillent, Cox and Redován with 27.8°C, Almoradí with 27.7°C and Dénia with 27.6°C.
However, it looks like we could be leaving January on a sour note as Alicante province is under several yellow weather alerts this week thanks to the aftershocks of storm Herminia. The front is creating very strong gusts inland which are having a ripple effect along the coast, where the waves and sea currents make it dangerous to take a dip.
These summer-like temperatures Alicante has been experiencing throughout January have been mirrored in the likes of Valencia and Murcia, but believe it or not, only a handful of towns have actually broken records. On the Costa Blanca, the highest ever January temperature was recorded on the 29th of the month back in 2021, when the mercury hit 29.8°C.
And so the weather rollercoaster continues, with a taste of every season forecast this week. We can say goodbye to the scorching temperatures for the moment since the thermometers will barely tip 20°C for the rest of the week, and there’s a good chance of some scattered showers too.
