ARCHIVED - Benidorm sees worst flooding in years, wreaking havoc for streets and beaches
Torrential rainfall discharged more than 90 litres of water in just one hour in Benidorm
This weekend, Benidorm registered its rainiest day in years, accumulating 91 litres per square metre, most of which fell between 2am and 3am in the early hours of Sunday morning in a severe episode of torrential rainfall.
Records also exceeded 100l/m2 in Senija and reached 88.2l/m2 in the Serra Gelada and Alfaz del Pi.
Since noon on Saturday September 17, the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters of Alicante has been called out about 36 times for emergencies related to the rain, 28 of them in the Marina Baixa and, of these, 20 in the city of Benidorm.
The emergency workers’ trials began at noon on Saturday in Ibi and Elche, when they were called out to help intervene in problems occurring on public roads becoming flooded.
The most common problem they were called on to solve was with water drainage and rescues due to heavy rainfall, accounting for 17 of the 28 interventions in the Marina Baixa area. However, Benidorm City Council was able to act fast and there were teams on site to repair the damage caused to homes, walls, roads and beaches in record time.
