ARCHIVED - Cartagena Amphitheatre takes another step towards opening to the public
The iconic Cartagena Roman Amphitheatre should have regular public tours by the autumn
The third phase of the Master Plan for the Roman Amphitheatre in Cartagena has been put out to tender by the Department of Archaeological Heritage, after which time it should be open to the public with regular tours of the famous ruins.
This phase has a deadline of ten months for completion and will result in 25% of the historic site being excavated. The budget amounts to one million euros, 250’000 of which has been included in the 2023 municipal budget. The remainder will come from the Ministry of Transport.
The delicate excavation work will involve the ancient Roman waste and water systems as well as the as yet unexplored galleries abutting Calle Doctor Fleming. This part of the project will clear the way for future exterior work on the plaza and the walls of the Amphitheatre itself.
According to deputy mayor Ana Belén Castejón, the entire external façade will receive a facelift, greatly improving the appearance of the entire structure.
Inside, the podium which separates the spectator stands from the arena will be resurrected, allowing visitors to amble freely through the area, while the installation of ramps will make the site accessible to all.
Finally, floodlights and beacons will be placed at strategic points so that the spectacular Amphitheatre will be lit up, even at night.
“After these works, 25% of the site will be excavated, specifically the area included between the major axis and the minor axis of the Amphitheatre. In addition, a tour will have been enabled so that it can be open to the public on a regular basis,” Ms Belén Castejón explained, which, of course, “is great news for everyone.”
