Cartagena bars given extra terrace space for Spain's World Cup final

Bars and restaurants will be allowed to expand their terraces on Sunday as fans gather to watch Spain take on Argentina

Bars and restaurants in Cartagena will be allowed to temporarily expand their terraces this Sunday July 19 as Spain prepares to face Argentina in the World Cup final.

The measure has been agreed by Cartagena City Council and hospitality association Hostecar to help venues cope with what is expected to be a huge turnout of football fans eager to watch the match.

According to the council, the temporary expansion will allow more people to enjoy the game in bars and restaurants while creating a festive atmosphere across the city.

Councillor for Commerce and Hospitality Belén Romero explained that the move is designed to support local businesses during what promises to be one of the busiest nights of the summer for the hospitality sector.

Municipal technicians and public safety services have already coordinated plans to ensure the expanded terraces can operate safely. The council said particular attention will be paid to maintaining access to homes and keeping emergency routes and evacuation areas clear.

Hostecar president Querubina Rosique welcomed the decision, explaining that many bar and restaurant owners had requested additional space ahead of the final.

"We are very pleased because many of us asked for more space on our terraces," she said.

"The bars fill up with people watching football, and this measure will allow us to better serve our customers."

Spain will take on Argentina on Sunday evening, with bars, restaurants and terraces across the country expected to be packed as fans cheer on La Roja in their bid for World Cup glory.
