ARCHIVED - Catland: the charity cat shelter being built in Javea that local politicians are refusing to fund
The non-profit organisation in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province, needs 37,000 euros to complete its new cat shelter
A cat charity dedicated to collecting, caring for and rehoming feral felines in Javea that has basically been left out to dry by local politicians and relies totally on the generosity of private donators desperately needs 37,000 euros to complete a much-needed shelter.
Catland Javea began building a new shelter four years ago on municipality-owned land that was donated by the Town Council for this very purpose. However, despite giving the land, the actual construction of the facility and its future maintenance is reliant on private investment, with no support from the local authority.
"We received no funding from the council and its construction would not be possible without the generosity and donations and the work of the small Catland team", according to the cat shelter.
Basically, its ongoing 24-7 rescue and adoption work is sustained, above all, by private donations and not municipal subsidies, creating a massive problem when it comes to completing the new shelter when donated funds also go towards day-to-day activities.
Catland assures that it is constantly looking for sponsors and subsidies "but the current economic crisis, bureaucracy and strict regulations on the materials to be used to obtain the zoological licence have caused construction costs to skyrocket".
Despite the obvious obstacles, Catland has raised an impressive 73,000 euros towards the new shelter. However, it is not enough. Through its social networks, Catland has revealed it needs a further 37,000 euros to be able to execute the project "which would not be exclusive to Javea, but which would offer a service in La Marina, which is scarce at the moment".
"We are building this shelter for cats and kittens that would otherwise be living on the streets. We have raised enough money to start the build, but we need your help to finish and open the shelter.
"No donation is too small, every euro counts", Catland stressed, appealing for public help on its website which explains the different ways to make donations, as well as all the information about the non-profit organisation and its objectives.
One upcoming fundraiser takes place on September 30, when team members Claire and Sarah will take on a 'walk for charity' challenge and will trek from from Benidorm to Javea - about 40km - to raise funds for Catland Javea and the Centro de Dia Santa Maria de Betania, Javea’s special daycare centre for the elderly.
