Dead body found in car following Barcelona floods

Catalonia firefighters made the grim discovery of a dead body inside an abandoned car on Wednesday June 14, just 24 hours after a violent storm grounded flights and shut off roads all across Spain.

Responding to an alert from a passer-by, rescue workers made their way to the Barcelona town of Ullastrell, which had been lashed with torrential rain the day before, shortly after 7pm.

They found a car stranded in a dry river bed in the Can Font area. When firefighters removed the roof of the vehicle they discovered “at least one dead person” inside.

The local police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, has since opened an investigation to determine how this tragedy came about, but their initial hypothesis is that the driver and vehicle were swept away in the flood.

The mayor of Ullastrell, Jaume Puig, confirmed that the body of a man had been recovered and that the City Council had set up locations “for the psychological assistance of the family and friends” of the victim.

The worst of the rain hit Barcelona on Tuesday June 13 and the city of Terrassa, close to where the dead body was found, registered more than 110 litres of rain in just two hours.
