ARCHIVED - Hospitalisations remain stable but ICU admissions increase: Spain Covid update Nov 28
Intensive care admissions have increased by 6% in the last week in Spain

The fears of many experts that Spain would experience a devastating coronavirus rebound come winter appear to have been largely unfounded as one of the crucial indicators, the cumulative incidence rate, has plummeted by 40 points since this time last month.
Daily infections remain largely unchanged and hospitalisations in general have stabilised, but there has been a worrying increase of 6% in the number of people being admitted to Spain’s intensive care units.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health has reported 21,783 new coronavirus cases in its latest update on Friday November 25, which brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,595,504.
Cumulative incidence rate
More worrying is the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60. This important indicator has increased this week to reach 181.59 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. However, the figures we’re seeing as December approaches are still a far cry from this time last month, when the incidence rate was at 221.58 cases.
The 7-day incidence rate in citizens aged 60 or over stands at 81.39. Crucially, this number is more than half the 14-day figure, which is a positive indication that infections are on the decline in general.
Looking at the incidence by autonomous community, Andalucia continues to have the best figures, standing at 58.17 cases this week.
The Valencian Community is faring well and is now well under the national average, with an incidence rate of 153.09 cases per 100,000.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 3,779 patients admitted to hospital throughout Spain (a decrease of 34 people compared to last Friday) while 216 people are being treated for more serious conditions in intensive care (an increase of 12).
This means that 3.04% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients while the occupancy rate in intensive care is at 2.45%.
A further 86 Covid-related fatalities were reported in the update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 115,901 people.
Vaccination data
As of November 28, 92.9% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,169,638 people have now received two doses.
In addition, 39,276,094 people (93.1%) have had at least one dose.
