New suspension bridge makes Malaga's Caminito del Rey up to 11°C cooler
The redesigned route reduces steep climbs and helps visitors avoid the worst of the summer heat

Once known as one of the world's most dangerous walks, the Caminito del Rey has taken another step forward with the opening of Spain's longest suspension bridge, giving visitors a cooler and more comfortable way to complete the famous route through Malaga's spectacular Gaitanes Gorge.
The new bridge forms part of a redesigned southern exit from the trail and, according to early studies, could make a noticeable difference during the height of summer. Measurements carried out by construction company Sando found temperatures on the new section were up to 11.4°C lower than those recorded on the previous route. During the hottest part of the day, the average reduction was 5.8°C.
That could be welcome news for the thousands of people who tackle the attraction every year, particularly during the summer months when soaring temperatures can make the final stretch especially demanding. The cooler conditions are expected to reduce the risk of heat-related problems such as dehydration, exhaustion and fainting.
The redesign also makes the route physically easier to complete. The old exit included a steep uphill finish with several flights of stairs after visitors had already walked the length of the gorge. The new layout removes nine stair sections and around 30 metres of climbing, allowing walkers to continue on a mainly downhill route until the end.
Safety has also been improved behind the scenes. The updated exit provides emergency services with faster and more direct access, making it easier to evacuate anyone who becomes unwell or injured without having to negotiate steep stairways or difficult terrain.
Located less than 60 kilometres from Malaga city, the Caminito del Rey stretches through the dramatic Gaitanes Gorge between Ardales, Antequera and Álora. The walkway earned international fame after being labelled one of the world's most dangerous hiking routes before undergoing a major restoration project and reopening to the public in 2015.
