ARCHIVED - Winter arrives with the first cold snap: Spain weather Nov 28-Dec 1
Many regions in Spain will experience sub-zero temperatures this week as the thermometers plummet
After yet another spring-like weekend, Spain is preparing to welcome December in true winter fashion, with plummeting temperatures that will see the thermometers dip below zero in many areas at night.
A cold snap will channel northwesterly winds towards Spain from the beginning of the week, resulting in a drop in temperature by as much as 10ºC in some regions on Monday November 28.
At the same time, another front will cross the country and the Balearic Islands, leaving abundant rain in the North and placing several communities at significant risk due to adverse sea conditions and strong winds.
Trade winds will create a blustery day in the Canary Islands but the south will again escape the worst of the weather on Monday, with the temperatures hovering at around 20ºC in Alicante and Murcia.
Tuesday November 29 will dawn predominantly cloudy in the north and east of the country, with rain and showers that should subside towards the afternoon. It will be mostly clear and bright in the south with only the slightest dip in daytime temperatures.
The nights will be noticeably cooler almost everywhere, however, dropping to single digits with the exception of the Canary Islands, where the minimums will remain in the high teens.
The Balearic Islands, Cantabria and the Basque Country are all on orange alert while a yellow weather warning has been issued in Aragón, Asturias, Catalonia, Galicia, Navarra and the Valencian Community for adverse sea conditions and strong gusts.
Wednesday November 30 will be by far the coldest day, with the mercury failing to exceed 15ºC in most areas.
"Wednesday will be the peak of the cold, with frost in large areas of the interior, especially in the north and east of the peninsula," according to Rubén del Campo, spokesperson for Aemet.
However, only Galicia has been issued with a weather warning for dangerous seas.
Rain is forecast in the north again which could spread to other areas, although the Mediterranean coast will likely remain dry, albeit slightly overcast. Night-time temperatures will also fall significantly in the south.
Looking ahead to Thursday December 1, Aemet believes that a low in the Gulf of Cádiz will likely bring some rain and occasional storms to the southwest of the country, although some sunny spells are also forecast. Showers are expected in the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Community and southern Catalonia which could spread in a more scattered way to eastern Andalucia.
Wind from the east and northeast in the most of Spain and the Balearic Islands, although no weather warnings have been issued for December 1.
