An elderly woman has died and three other people were taken to hospital after a fire broke out at a detached house on Calle Liberiades in Orihuela Costa late on Saturday night, April 25.

 

Emergency services were called to the property at around 10pm. Paramedics from the SAMU emergency medical service performed resuscitation on a 77-year-old woman at the scene, but were unable to save her and she was pronounced dead.

 

Three other people, two women of unknown age and a 78-year-old man, were treated for smoke inhalation and taken by ambulance to Torrevieja Hospital.

 

According to the Alicante Fire Consortium, the fire started in the kitchen and quickly spread through the house. The woman who died was the homeowner, who shared the property with an elderly English-speaking couple. She suffered third-degree burns, and despite the combined efforts of firefighters, local police and paramedics, she could not be saved.

 

A team of eight from the Torrevieja fire station attended the scene, including a sergeant, a corporal and six firefighters, supported by a command unit, a heavy urban pumper and a ladder truck. The fire was brought under control quickly and the operation concluded at 11.45pm.
