Major facelift underway for Avenida del Cabo in Orihuela Costa

The €200,000 project aims to improve accessibility and year-round traffic flow in Cabo Roig

Work is continuing along Avenida del Cabo in Cabo Roig as the local government pushes ahead with a €200,000 upgrade aimed at modernising one of its busiest coastal roads.

The project has already delivered a major improvement in street lighting, with outdated sodium vapour lamps being replaced by modern LED units designed to improve visibility while reducing energy use.

Councillor Víctor Valverde said the change is already making a noticeable difference along a stretch of road that carries heavy traffic all year round, and becomes especially busy during the summer months.

He also stressed that the works go far beyond lighting, with the project now moving into a second phase focused on pedestrian safety and general road improvements.

One of the next steps includes installing six new lampposts in areas where lighting has been missing for years following damage caused by accidents and wear over time. Improvements will also be made to the central reservation.

At the same time, around 14 pedestrian crossings are being brought up to current accessibility standards. Several of these will be rebuilt with proper kerb ramps and corrected gradients to make them safer and easier to use for all pedestrians.

The council says the aim is to improve overall conditions along the avenue rather than simply carry out isolated repairs, with a focus on lighting, accessibility and safer movement for both drivers and pedestrians.

The works form part of Orihuela City Council’s wider infrastructure renewal plan along the Orihuela Costa, which has seen several streets and public areas gradually upgraded in recent months.
