Green light for widening the N-332 in Orihuela Costa

Extra lanes will be added at the dreaded bottleneck in Torrevieja

It’s a saga that’s been tormenting Orihuela Costa residents for years but it looks like there’s been significant movement in the plans to widen the N-332 dual carriageway at Torrevieja. This week, the Environmental Impact Report came back with no issues, meaning that the project can progress to the next stage.

Before any substantial building work is carried out in Spain, a survey of the land has to be carried out to guarantee that the job won’t negatively impact the environment, air quality or local residents in any way.

Now that the Ministry of Transport has the favourable report in its hand, the plans can push ahead.

The stretch of the N-332 that passes by the outskirts of Torrevieja might only be a few kilometres long but with just one lane in each direction, it’s a notorious bottleneck, especially during the summer months.

The project to widen the N-332 in Torrevieja involves an investment of 55 million euros and will double the number of lanes along 4.47 kilometres of the bypass, between the junctions with the CV-95 roads and Avenida Rosa Mazón Valero (from km 53.690 to 58.160 of the N-322).

The aim of the project is to "strengthen the capacity of the road to improve the flow of traffic and road safety, reducing the high levels of congestion," according to the government.

Around 40,000 vehicles per day travel along the Torrevieja bypass; this number can reach as high as 50,000 in high season, meaning there are nearly always long tail-backs.

While the project has thankfully proceeded to the next stage, there’s still no definitive date for when work on the N-332 expansion will actually begin.
