Police hunt Bulgarian man who tried to murder his brother-in-law in Orihuela Costa

Alerts have been issued in Alicante and the Region of Murcia to track down the dangerous suspect

A manhunt is underway for a 38-year-old Bulgarian national who reportedly tried to murder his 62-year-old bother-in-law at his relatives’ home in Orihuela Costa. The victim was stabbed in the neck during a violent argument on Monday February 17 and the man’s wife also suffered knife wounds to her hands during the altercation.

The suspect fled after the attack and presumably took the knife with him, as no matching weapon was found at the scene. His family has since revealed that the Bulgarian man suffers from schizophrenia.

The 62-year-old victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Torrevieja, where he underwent surgery for the injury to his neck and is understood to be recovering well. The suspect’s sister later told police her hands were cut when she tried to wrestle the knife from her brother; her wounds were treated at home and she didn’t require hospitalisation.

The perpetrator fled the scene in a white car and alerts have been sent by the Guardia Civil to patrols in Alicante and the Region of Murcia to be on the lookout.

This latest attack comes just two months after the disappearance of Belfast man John George from Orihuela Costa, a missing person’s case that has turned into a murder investigation. The 37-year-old father of two vanished on December 14 and his body was eventually found in a lemon grove in Rojales on January 7.

He had been shot to death.

This case is still open and international arrest warrants have been sent out to find his alleged killer Jonny Smith, also from Northern Ireland, who fled to Thailand.
