Expat attempted murderer arrested in Orihuela Costa

The Bulgarian national attacked his brother-in-law in a house in Cabo Roig

The Guardia Civil have tracked down and arrested a 39-year-old Belgian fugitive who stabbed both his brother-in-law and sister in Orihuela Costa on Monday February 17. The frenzied attack took place at a home in La Regia, a residential area of Cabo Roig.

According to official reports, the suspect went to his sister’s home at around 5.30pm and stabbed her husband in the next during an argument. Hearing a commotion, the suspect’s sister went upstairs to investigate and she too was slashed on both hands when she tried to wrestle the weapon away.

The Bulgarian man fled the scene in a Volkswagen Tiguan and alerts were sent out to police patrols throughout Alicante and the Region of Murcia.

The brother-in-law, a 63-year-old Spanish man, was rushed to Torrevieja hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for his neck wounds.

The man’s sister later told investigating officers that the perpetrator suffers from schizophrenia.

A couple of days later, a vehicle matching the description of the get-away car was spotted in Pilar de la Horadada, just 10 kilometres south of Orihuela Costa. It’s understood that the man was initially heading for Andalucía but changed his mind for some reason, and returned to Alicante. The suspect was arrested in Pilar at 10.30am on Wednesday February 19.

An Orihuela judge has ordered that the man be admitted to the Fontcalent Penitentiary Psychiatric Hospital in Alicante on Friday February 21.
